I have a gravy boat that I just picked up at an estate sale. It’s very shiny. All the silverware, which was definitely real, was shiny and untarnished as well. There is a joint where the top, bowl part was soldered to the foot, and the silver in the soldering is still tarnished. Should I assume that the piece is stainless steel? There’s no stamp, but the piece is more than likely pre-1950. It actually looks as though it was never used. Any suggestions? I’d really hate to scratch the inside of the foot even though no one would ever see it. I’m hoping you’ll say if the solder is tarnished and the rest isn’t then it’s stainless.

That’s Bleach(along with a few others that are not Vinegar)that turn Silver Black you numbskull!! Thank goodness ignorance isn’t a crime or you’d be doin life w/o parole. Practice what you preach, do your homework, and please proof read your comment before you hit send. And for GOD’S sake, apologize for your interruption.
You have this backwards. Vinegar will react with real silver turning it black. Leave a silver coin in vinegar overnight, and it will be black the next day. I ruined a bunch of my coins because I followed the advice of misinformed people on the internet. I suggest you test what you are writing about before giving such advice online.
